Brewery: Christian Heurich Brewing Co., Washington, D.C.
Manufacturer/Plant: Kaufmann & Strauss
Date of manufacture: circa 1898-1900, pre-Prohibition
Contents/Type: n/a
Condition/Comments: 13” diameter. Very unique illustration style employed on this very early tray.  The greenback Kaufmann & Strauss trays were made roughly 1898-1900. There are very few trays that can be dated before 1898 which is evidently when Kaufmann & Strauss started printing on metal. By 1901, K&S trays generally had black backs. This tray shows the factory started by Heurich in 1894 and finished in 1895. The building pictured on the tray is dated 1894. Heurich added bottling facilities and started bottling in 1897 and built satellite bottling plants in Baltimore and Norfolk shortly thereafter. Both of these names are listed on the tray. Heurich won bronze and silver medals at the 1900 Paris exposition. Neither of these medals is pictured on the tray and they most likely would have been if the manufacture of the tray were after winning those medals. (See lot 225 for the other Heurich factory tray which dates from about 1905 and notice bronze and sliver metals on the left rim. These likely are the 1900 Paris medals.)  The eagle is derived from the germanic eagle. Note that there is minor, professional restoration to the rim and the stairs under the lady. Colorful and rare, wonderful condition. From the Collection of the beloved Rayner Johnson. Thank you Richard Hager for information/assistance with this description.
