Brewery:  Stark-Tuscarawas Brewing Co., Canton, OH
Manufacturer:  Meyercord Co.
Date of manufacture:  Circa early 1900s
Dimensions:  16” w x 22” h x 4” d
Comments:  Exceptional graphics show an historic American figure, likely George Washington, shaking hands with a Native American in feather headdress over a barrel of the brewery’s beer, suggesting the beer is an effective trade product and even peace-maker. A very rare Vitrolite sign, this is one of just two or three known to us. It shows some weathering/aging of the paint on the face. The frame has wear, with small dings and scrapes, but retains some of its original paint. The exposed metal on the frame shows mostly as patina, and there is very little rust. There is no metal backing sheath, though nails exist in positions to indicate that there may have been one present at one time. (See detailed images of lot 144 Hudephl Votrolite at moreanauctions.com to view a sign with metal backing for comparison). Frame aside, the sign itself looks wonderful with the brewery’s large illustrative trademark symbol taking center stage. This very well could be a once-in-a-lifetime sign.
