Shonk Co. Litho, Chicago, Illinois. Highly detailed graphics likely depict Cola di Rienzi (1313ñ1354) who, according to Wikipedia, was a late medieval Italian populist figure who succeeded in outwitting and then defeating the nobles and their followers and in raising the power of the people. Magnanimous at first, he was forced by events to crush the nobles' rebellion against the people's power, but popular opinion changed and even the Church, which had urged him to assert himself, turned against him. In the end the populace burned the Capitol, in which Rienzi and a few adherents had made a last stand. Only tiny imperfections. Excellent condition. All original. See brightly lit photos.
