Comments/description: Presented in recognition of 30 years of service, this impressive 10K gold employee award ring was presented to Michael M. Kneip, who was employed by the Carling Brewing Co. from 1933 through 1963. The recipient's name and years of service are engraved inside the band. The interior is also stamped 10K along with the maker's mark. The ring features a faceted black stone with a round clear center stone, surrounded by raised Carling Brewing Co lettering on the bezel and attractive brewery-themed imagery on the shoulders. The recessed decorative areas retain their original gold-colored finish, providing pleasing contrast against the polished 10K gold. Consignor states that he was informed by a jeweler that "the diamond has very good clarity, and is .4 to .5 (approx 1/2 carat) in size." The exact ring size, gold weight, and the authenticity or specifications of the center stone have not been documented. A 1957 Balfour catalog explains that BalfourÃs Bluecrest diamonds were evaluated for color, clarity, cutting and carat weight, and describes the color as being in the Ã¬finer white quality.Ã® It also says the Bluecrest stones would not show inclusions under 10â—Š magnification. So, Balfour was already using specific diamond-quality standards well before this 1963 ringÃ³not simply putting arbitrary commercial stones into its rings. A 1961 Balfour-made jewelry price list gives diamond sizes explicitly in points, e.g. 2-point, 5-point and 10-point diamonds.
