Fort Pitt Brewing Co., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Crown Cork & Seal, 12 ounces, circa 1944–1945. USBC 194-8.

Scarce WWII olive-drab crowntainer carrying the “Withdrawn Free of Internal Revenue Tax for Exportation” statement. One of the relatively few crowntainer labels produced in military olive drab, representing Fort Pitt’s contribution to supplying American servicemen with a familiar hometown beer. The crowntainer’s integrated body and cone accepted a conventional bottle cap, allowing breweries to use bottle-filling equipment. Note the additional New York address at 65 Auburn Avenue, Buffalo, beneath the export statement.

Condition

A particularly attractive example with rich olive color, substantial sheen and a bold, clean display face. The opposite face has some loss through the brewery-name banner, while the photos show scattered scratches, small spots and some drippings on the spout, possibly from shellac or other coating, old beer dripping, or factory imperfection. Excellent display quality for this scarce wartime label.
